Bitter Cold

We tied a record for coldest day since 1963, as the temperature went to a minus 13.  The wind chills were recorded as minus 25.  As I peeped out from under the covers this morning, I saw the sun shinning brightly.  It was hard to get out from under the warm covers.  The high today reached a cold 5 degrees.  I felt sorry for my husband, as he took off in the frigid cold to work.  I think every school and university in the state was closed.  It was a day to stay inside if you did not have to go anywhere.

You can feel the cold in the house as we have been asked by the power company to conserve electricity.  We had a power surge last night and prayed we did not loose electric.  I think that this definitely will be a winter that will be talked about for a long time.  Hope wherever you are, you are safe and warm.

Laney and I will count down the days until we hear lawn mowers instead of snow plows.  I don't think I'll complain about mowing grass, as it will be nice to be outside.  Summer, summer come again and bring back some fun in the sun again.

A Happy Ending

We are now having our third bast of cold Arctic air as the winds kicked up during the night and sent the temperature plunging into the teens.  A couple of times I thought the roof was going to take sail as winds gusted between 30 and 50 mph.   It is hard to believe it is very cold today as the sun is shinning.  The temperature is going to dip well below zero tonight and a high of eight tomorrow.  It is currently eight degrees right now.  On the bright side we are going to have several days of sunshine.  It is great to see the sun out as it does chase away the winter blues.

We survived the weekend after getting dumped with an additional seven inches of snow depending on where you are located.  We seem to be stuck right in direct line of snow.  We are wondering when we will see our street again as it has been snow covered for what seems a long time.  I don' t think anyone will complain about the heat if winter ever ends.

We have not let the weather stop us from socializing, as we were out amongst friends this weekend.  I enjoyed being with some friends we had not seen for awhile.  Life seems to be getting back to normal after a long three years of great challenges.  I remember something my friend told me two years ago.  She talked about Stephen King living inside your head when life was difficult.  I remember laughing as if he had written a nightmare about my life.  She said I would know when it was finished. She was right the nightmare is over and the cast of characters have moved on.  The ending is great, because my husband and I are living.  The last page of the script read, they forgave each other and chose to live happily ever after.  They remembered to love each other always and forever.

I love you John !!!

Life is beautiful because of knowing you !

Zero

The polar vortex has ascended upon us once more.  The 10:00 am temperature is zero and the high today is seven degrees.  The wind chills tonight are predicted to be twenty below zero.  The only good thing about this weather is the beautiful sunshine.  We have actually had a few sunny days this week and lots more snow.  There is more snow on the way and more sub zero temperatures for next week.  I guess old man winter is making up for the last few mild winters we had.

Laney goes outside quickly and does not stay out to play.  Everything is frozen and the ice hurts her paw pads.  The good thing is that the snow is not sticking to her so the clean up is easier.  Protect your four legged friends during the extreme weather.  They are sensitive to the extreme cold as we are.

The  best thing about winter is getting things done inside and hot cocoa.  I did manage to venture out a couple times this week.  I was trying to remember what it is like to walk around in flip flops and shorts instead of several layers of clothes that restrict  movement.  I wish I liked winter sports, but it is actually to cold and dangerous to be out.  I think  I'll stay in today and admire the sunshine from the window and mark off the days till spring.  Stay warm if you're stuck in the path of the polar vortex.

Go Away Winter

The month of  January is passing by quickly and it is going to be remembered as one of the coldest and snowiest.  We have had 26 inches of snow for our winter season according to the weatherman.    Thank goodness the sun is shinning today, as we were blanketed with snow yesterday and expecting up to 3 inches more this eve.  Spring will be welcomed this year with shouts of  hallejuha.  I can't wait to see green grass again.

Laney loves running through the snow and I enjoy watching her.  However, I do not like cleaning up the mess she creates when she comes in the house.  The snow is fun, but the cleanup from playing in the snow is no fun.

The only thing to do in the winter is meeting with friends for lunch and doing home repairs.  It is hard to believe it has been almost a year ago that my husband and  I were preparing for our half marathon.  We were on the university track several times a week.  This winter we are  hoping for safe driving days to go to the university.  Maybe some day we will be able to step outside without slipping and sliding.

My grateful list to get through winter is waking up everyday next to my husband and having the best spoiled dog ever.

Arctic Blast

I was reading some of my blog writings from last January.  It is hard to believe it has been almost a year ago since we walked a half marathon in San Antonio Texas.  I still have my medal hanging here in the family room to remind me that things can be accomplished in life.  My husband and I met that goal of walking a half marathon by training and encouraging each other.   We remind ourselves that all is possible, but we have to work to see the end result.  We can apply that same concept to heal our minds.  We are working on changing our life and bringing happiness back.

The first goal this year is to get out and socialize despite the obstacles of winter.  So, we are filling up the social calendar.  We may have to slip and slide and bundle in layers, but we will be having fun with friends.  I am learning to embrace winter and made a decision not to let it get me down.  This is going to be a big challenge, as we are having one of the worst winters in two decades.  So, the challenge is on and off we go into the winter wonderland.

Speaking of the worst winter in two decades, you would have thought the media had announced the world was coming to an end.  We went to the grocery store today and there were more people shopping than there was during the holidays.  There were thirty registers running and the lines were backed up to the middle of the store.  Literally some of the shelves of food were bare.  The media is predicting snow starting tonight and continuing tomorrow with up to six or more inches on top of the five we got two days ago.  I can handle the snow, but the Arctic blast coming is going to send me into hibernation.  They are expecting the temperature to be possibly a negative 40 degrees or more with the wind gust.  The high on Monday is negative 2 degrees.  Okay, my socializing may have to take a hiatus until the Arctic blast decides to take up residency somewhere else.  I have told myself this is only temporary and by the end of the week we will break 30 degrees.  A heat wave in comparison to the negative temperatures.  Thank goodness for hot chocolate, blankets and our warm home.

Lookout 2014 here we come!  Never say never and remember life is full of challenges, and we can move on and decide to live it under our own conditions.  Hello, we are alive!!

Life is beautiful with one spoiled dog named Laney!!
